God I’m behind on this exceptional series. I’ve got the first two books and they are by far some of the best manga I’ve read in a really long time. I only recently read my first Grendel tale, which was the very first Grendel story every drawn/written. While it was rough around the edges I could most definitely see a great deal of potential and can see why Wagner is so in demand. I’ve got to admit that I am lacking in the works by Wagner but everything I’ve ever read about the man has always pointed that he’s an exceptional talent and great storyteller. Whule I don’t think I’m the target audience for this, it’s just a good little reminder for me to maybe get some Grendel instead.

Probably won’t be getting this series as a hardcover, however I do tend to give Vertigo books the benefit of the doubt. Here’s what they have to say in the solicitation:

A series soo good that it needs that extra push of two variant hardcovers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hardcover being released with a friggin variant cover, unless it’s trying for two different markets (like the Marvel Premiere editions which will have the name of the writer in really large if they’re aiming for the bookmarket audience). This however is just giving your two friggin covers for no other reason but because. If they include the alternative cover on the inside as a pinup or something then they’re cool, otherwise, they’re a bunch of wankers as far as I’m concerned. Will I be picking this up? Seeing as I really felt that the series is a bit better than average but with some pretty good parts to it, I think I’ll probably wait for the cheaper soft cover version.

Just in time for the release of the movie. Not been keeping up with this series of books that have been coming out consistently from IDW. The books that I have bought have always been incredibly enjoyable and it’s a small little concept that has really sprouted an entire library of books and a movie for the creators which is great as it’s a good series. Massive fan of Bone. It’s strange that I bought the complete edition from about a year ago or something like that, and I’ve still not had the chance to just sit down and read through it. I do recommend this serious if you’ve not had the chance to have a look at it, you’re now getting it pretty cheap and in full colour which is great. I’m enjoying Jeff Smith’s black and white artwork, which is essentially golden in my eyes. The story follows the Bone brothers as they’re ousted from Boneville (think Duckville or whatever it’s called in the town the Scrouge McDuck has got that massive house that has a massive dollar sign on the front of it…although Smith has never shown us this place)..anyway it follows their adventures, and they do have many. Dragons, Cow Races, crazy grannies and lots of ‘Stupid, Stupid, Rat Creatures’. It’s a modern classic.

A few years ago I was given a couple of issues of Battle Pope. This is one of Robert Kirkman’s earliest endeavours into the world of publishing. I think he was getting this one done via his own company Funk-o-tron (I don’t have the copy in front of me and I can’t be bothered to check it online but I’m pretty sure). It’s a pretty funny book however in many ways it wasn’t doing him any favours of getting noticed by the bigger companies. With his Invincible and Walking Dead series I think Marvel saw the potential and have tapped him for many things. This is where he started, in colour no less (they were black and white comics at the time). If you insult easily nothing to see here, move along.

Steve Rude has been mentioned to me as an artist’s artist. So I always wanted to check out what he’s famous for. Unfortunately in a move that I really can’t understand Dark Horse has seen it fit to make these things these expensive hardcovers. All I would have liked is to get trade paperbacks of this series and Solar and Magnus. I can’t see why they don’t release them in a more affordable format. I want to read them but don’t want to shell out this much money for trying something out. Hopefully they’ll click and do something about it in the near future.

This is a graphic novel from Brian Wood. It’s strange but I thought this was meant to come out from Ait Planet Lar. However it seems that it’s coming out from Image. I’ve not heard anything to tell me that Larry Young and Brian Wood have had a falling out or something. Wood has also been releasing other stuff from other publishers such as Oni Press and Vertigo comics which makes me wonder is all. Is he just trying to just put his name out there or is there something more? This is all rumour mongering on my part but it’s just something that made me wonder.

Big fan of these two artists. I believe they’re husband and wife. When I was growing up the only artwork I’d see from these two was on trading cards so this should be good fun to have as a coffee table book. Definitely something to have a look at.

Damn, that was fast. I bought the first volume not too long ago and I haven’t had the chance to read through it all. This is something I’ve been waiting for a long time. Basically Rebellion is publishing the entire Judge Dredd comics right from the begining. It’s a very good idea and the books are chunky and well put together. Some of the dialogue and stories are pretty hockey but that’s because it’s all 70s stuff. Hopefully once the 80s roll around the edge that underlined this character shines through.

I have really lost touch with this series and the ABC books in general. It’s like I lost interest in general, even though I own all these books as hardcovers. It’s just one of those things I decided to do for Mr.Moore’s stuff coming out at the time. Some of the books I don’t think warrent a hardcover treatment but I buy anyway because it’s tradition with me now. I’ve got like 15 of the things or something stupid like that. Sadly I only bought book 3 I think of this series. It’s an excellent series. Great character and superb art in general, especially when Chris Sprouse is handling the art. Definitely worth checking out all the earlier versions as well.

I’ve heard a great deal about this Manga. It’s meant to be very addictive and details the story of two chefs who are fighting it out to be the best in the kitchen. It sounds ridiculous, but I’ve come to understand that most Manga that sound idiotic are generally the ones that are the most fun. Something that comics in general seem to be lacking.

Speaking of fun manga, yeah this isn’t one of them. This is bloody violent and it’s bloody good. Month in and month out I plug this because you have to buy these little volumes. They’re the best introduction to feudal japan you’ll likely get, this side of reading Shogun (which is over 1000 pages or whatever). Highly recommended series, it’s just a crying shame that we can only look forward to a few more volumes of this before it’s run it’s course which is a crying shame.

I read the review on Newsarama, and knew then I had to buy it. The trade paperback has got an introduction by Alex Ross, loads of additional pages, comes in an landscape publishing format and is one of the good saves by Image Comics from the ill fated Speakeasy comic book company. Once again this book will be getting a serious reviewing pretty soon so don’t worry, but it’s seems very well thought out and the artwork is unique if nothing else, believe me that’s harder to type than you think.

Blade of the Immortal trade paperbacks come along once, if we’re lucky twice a year. This is basically the manga that got me into the Japanese culture. It’s one of the most brutal and beautiful and complicated and intricate and delicate series you can ever imagine…I’m going to stop here because I’ve got 14 volumes to review and I don’t want to waste my words right now. Needless to say if you’re a believer, you’re getting this. If you’re not a believer then I’m hoping upcoming reviews can do it justice and convert you.
