Another slowish week, which is just as good because I’ve got soo much catching up to do it’s unreal. I’m going to have to get some serious review writing going because one review a day is just not enough. Hopefully I’ll get a couple cracked on this weekend. In the meanwhile here’s a list of things that caught my eye. As always if you’ve got a book you think should be considered, don’t hesitate to add your voice, it’s what the comments are there for.

CHEEKY ANGEL VOL 10 GN $9.99
DC UNIVERSE THE STORIES OF ALAN MOORE (MR) $19.99
So DC has decided to rerelease this trade paperback that was only originally published like a year ago or thereabouts. What a load of shit. I mean honestly. They couldn’t have decided to include the Batman story in there as well? No I’m not buying this book again, but if you missed it the first times here it is again, more complete. There is some ‘rubbish’ in here. It’s not really rubbish, but you and I both know that this is just for completists. It’s not exactly a crowning moment in Alan’s unbelievable publishing career. I bet with the exception of a few books he’d as soon forget about this one, while most writers would hold the work in high regard if they created it. It’s a bit unfair on the work due to what the man has created since then. If I had $20 to spend it on Moore goodness I’d go for something I didn’t have (which in my case is not a whole lot).

METAL GEAR SOLID VOL 2 TP $19.99
I remember when they were routing this as something that was going to put IDW Publishing on the map so to speak. In effect I didn’t hear much from it, so I guess it wasn’t as big a success story as they would have hoped. I’ve never played the game so I don’t know if it’s good or close to the game or whatever. Having said that after reading DarkStakers I just didn’t get that geek feeling I got after reading Street Fighter. So I guess this one is basically for those who are fans of the game.

RED SEAS UNDER BANNER OF KING DEATH TP $16.99
ROBO HUNTER PLAY IT AGAIN SAM TP $17.99
SAIKANO VOL 7 GN (MR) $9.95
I really should get up to speed on this series. Saikano is the story of the ultimate fighting machine. The twist is she’s in the body of a tiny 15 year old girl, who’s trying to lead a normal life and go out with her boyfriend. It’s pretty funny and I actually really enjoyed the characterisation and the pacing of the story. Not too fast, not too slow.
SEVEN SOLDIERS OF VICTORY VOL 1 TP $14.99
Grant Morrison’s other DC work. He’s got a lot of stuff coming out this year, but this was his major push last year, at least in terms of volume. I’ll definitely be flipping through this in the store although. He has said in an interview (I’ll try and dig up that link) that this was his most straight forward superhero story. This one just didn’t have the artistic clout behind it to get me interested to be honest, although I have read good things about it. Put this one in the maybe section.
SOULFIRE VOL 1 HC $24.99
A few years ago this would have been a must. Now I find Michael Turner’s work a bit sub-par. I’ll explain. I think the man draws the female figure in an exceptional and unique manner. He does put a lot of effort into his storytelling and he does do detail very well. One thing however he’s not so good at it drawing the male figure, which is always a bit on the ridiculous side. He doesn’t have an honest flare for the pose (if it’s not female) and his faces are very lacking and generally everyone looks the same.
I picked up the collected edition of this a while ago. I couldn’t tell you what it was about even though I read 2 or 3 issues worth (can’t even remember that). Not really his fault I guess but still not really good sign for the book and whether or not I’ll plunk down the cash to buy it.
SPIDER-MAN VS SILVER SABLE VOL 1 TP $15.99
YOUNGBLOOD MAXIMUM COLLECTION VOL 1 SC (RES) $24.99
KOOOOLL!!!! I actually own the first 2 issues of Youngblood. Whether you like it or not, YB was the first book to be published by Image Comics. That means it’s got history. This collection is basically the first volume rewritten by Joe Casey to fit into the new era. I think, although I’m not sure, that this was also recoloured which is nice. Comes a couple of weeks after the Spawn collection was also released, so now all that WS need to do is get a Wildcats collection out as well to celebrate 11years. Which reminds me, why didn’t WS celebrate this like the other Image founders?
